Volunteers are Special
Effective volunteers see themselves in a specific way:
Ř
They identify themselves with the people that need help, rather than to
withdraw from them.
Ř
They believe that they are able to handle the challenges of the support
situation require of them.
Ř
They see themselves as:
- trustworthy and credible
- people can count on them
- people need them
- people respect them.
Effective supporters will help people to be (or
become) free, rather that to try to control them.
These supporters
are not narrow-minded.
They do not hide their feelings.
They are involved in the process of helping the client to seek a
solution, rather than to offer their own pre-set “solutions”.
They focus on
people rather than on objects, facts, rules and regulations. (This also
makes them vulnerable.) They focus on the client that they are working
with, rather than to look at reality as a set of objective fact that
need to be analysed in the process of finding options.
They are
empathetic and try to experience the reality of the feelings of the
person that they try to support.
It cannot be
said that these supporters are extremely humble or generous. They have
(or they are working to have) their self-image in place.
They are our
representatives, not replacements, because we all share responsibility.

"We pray that we will be able to help people to see the grace of God and to
reach their full potential through our Ministries."

"
We are committed to help people to come in a dynamic
relationship with God, because then they will be at peace with
themselves and they will be able to work at their
relationships with others."
Wynand & Barbara Louw, Founders of ITN.
"My personal goal is to encourage al least one person a day and I
know that will make a difference."
